When is alcohol going to be delivered by drones and serving machines? Is this the start of the end of human services? Lots of non-paid jobs go for machines to work and humans to serve. What will happen when humans become obsolete to the needs of machines. Servingalcohol.com

Amazon/Shopify: stripped malls

The quake, shopkeepers of the world. Amazon will continue gorging on your business. Even as it conquers new worlds of computing and hardware, Jeff Bezos's company still has ambitions in retail: one day the pharmacy business; the next, stores with no checkouts.

Confronted with this juggernaut - on top of idiosyncratic problems - shareholders in other retail stocks have taken fright this year. Rite Aid has more than halved. JC Penney has fallen by more than 40 percent. Urban Outfitters and Macy's have fallen by a third. Other chains, including American Eagle Outfitters, are also among the worst-performing stocks. Shares in Sears, the venerable retailer to middle America, have recently bounced back, but only because fears it may cease operating have lessened.

Amazon, for its part, is up more than 30 percent; the stock has doubled in two years and may soon breach the $1,000 barrier for the first time.

There are bright spots away from Seattle. Amazon's retail goods revenues were $94bn in the past 12 months; physical retailer Home Depot's sales were $96bn. Meanwhile, Walmart's expensive gamble on ecommerce strategy - paying $3.5bn last year for the talent and technology of Jet.com - appears to be paying off. Online sales increased by 63 per cent in the last quarter, four times faster than those of Amazon.

Investors could also consider the arms dealer to the resistance. Shopify, a Canadian software company which recently celebrated its second anniversary as a public company, provides the tech backbone to more than 400,000 merchants online. They are mainly small businesses but larger retailers are adopting the platform too.

The problem for Shopify is its price. The shares have doubled this year alone, giving it an enterprise value of almost $8bn on sales of less than $500m and narrow losses. It is growing fast, with sales expected to be above $600m this year and more than $800m in 2018. But that is still a sky-high multiple for a business built on supplying Amazon's withering competition.
